FORMAL SURRENDER

JAPANESE AT RABAUL Recd. 9.10 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 6. The formal surrender of Rabaul and the 86,000 Japanese troops there was signed to-day. The ceremony began at 11 a.m. aboard the Britis*: carrier Glory, liying off Rabaul with two sloops as escort. The Japanese on Timor appear to be concentrating in the technically neutral Portuguese section of the island. One unconfirmed report says the Japanese surrendered, to the Portuguese Governor, representing a neutral Power.

Formal surrender of the Japanese Army in the Celebes will be accepted at i.xorotai by General Sir Thomas Blarney. The Japanese commander will be taken to Morotai for the ceremony.
