MARTON NOTES

WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAMS FOR AUCKLAND. The undermentioned players have been selected to represent Rangitikei at the forthcoming Dominion hockey tournament to bt held at Auckland:— J. Apirana J. Busn, E. Davidson (captain) P. Gotty, P. Grossart, M. Hutton, L. Kukutai, E. Mills, D. Paterson, L. Paterson, E. Pedersen. M. Pryce, P. Royal (vice-captain), L. Sadler and B. White. Manager. Miss M. Wilkie; chaperone, Mrs. B. Wing. Sealed Handicap Competition.

The final of the sealed handicap competition will be played between Kia Ora and Bulls on Saturday, following which A and B representative teams will play a match on the Marton Park. Teams are as follows: A Team.—B. White, E. Davidson, L. Kukutai, J. Bush, P. Grossart E. Mills M. Hutton, L. Sadler, J. Apirana, E. Pedersen, D, Paterson.

B Team.—Poutama, P. Gotty, J. Kinlock, S. Maxwell, M. Pryce, S. Thompson, D. Martyn, P. Christian, P. Royal, S. Duncan, L. Paterson. MARTON TABLE TENNIS. The match against the Stanway Club which took place on Monday, 19th Inst., proved a very enjoyable one. Sixteen players from each club took part and were divided into A and B teams of eight each. The Marton teams were just too good and won by a big majority of the 128 games played after some very hard tussles.

Supper was provided by the ladies of the Marton Club, under the guiding hand of Mrs. G. Hunter, and was heartily appreciated bv all. The president, Mr. G. Hunter, welcomed the Stanway Club and wished them an enjoyable evening, also that a return match be arranged and visits between the clubs become more frequent.

Mr. P. Lovelock suitably replied on behalf of Stanway and thanked the home club for their hospitality. , LABOUR PARTY’S DANCE.

Another successful dance was held by the Marton Labour Party in the Victory Hall on Saturday night. Firstclass music was supplied by Pompey Durie and his orchestra, which was very popular with the large crowd of dancers. The spot waltz was won by Miss Griffin and partner, the Monte Carlo by Miss June McDonald and Mr. Ken Knight, Miss Goi’e was the winner of the silk stockings, and another competition was won bv Mrs Richards. A dainty sunner was provided by the ladies’ committee. The next dane° willbe held in the Victory Hall on Saturday, September 15. and Pompey Durie will again supnlv the music. COURT LOYAL, HALCOMBE.

There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting or Court Loyal, Halcombe A.0.F., held in the Jubilee Hall Halcombe, on Tuesday evening. Bro. W. S. Page presided. Visitors were present from Court Little John (Marton). The installation of the new officers took place. C.R. Bro. R. Upchurch (Marton) installed the following:— C.R., Bro. W. S. Page; S.C.R., Bro., H. M. Dudding; S.W., Bro. A. Schaeler; J.W., Bro. R. George; 5.8., Bro. O. Hughes; J. 8., Bro. J. Marshall; treasurer, Bro. W. R. Powell; secretary, Bro. D. McLennan. District 5.8., Bro. L. Mclndoe addressed the meeting and acted as master of ceremonies. Two new members were proposed. After Lodge closed supper was dispensed and indoor bowls were played. VICTORY DANCE AT RATA. The committee of the Rata Memorial Haall is holding a grand victory dance in the new hall on Tuesday, August 28, and an invitation is extended to all who enjoy a real evening's enjoyment. FIRE BRIGADE DANCE. The Marton Fire Brigade will hold its usual dance in the Victory Hall on Saturday, August 25. Marks’ orchestra novnrty dances and a “super” supper will be featured. WELCOME HOME AT TURAKINA. A welcome home dance to all returned men in the Turakina district will be held in the Turakina Town Hall to-night (Thursday). Everybody cordially invited. PUBLIC MEETING AT MANGAVVEKA. A public meeting will be held in the Rest Room, Mangaweka, to-night (Thursday) at 8 p.m. for the purpose of deciding to hold a victory ball. WANGANUI WOOL TRANSFERRED TO KAKARIKI WORKS. The Kakariki freezing works are now to become a wool store to accommodate some of the surplus of last season’s wool clip until shipping space becomes available. Local arrangements have been made by the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., as agents for the Wanganui Woolbrokers’ Association, which intends clearing certain Wanganui stores ready for the reception of the next clip.

It is estimated that several thousand bales of dumped wool will be stored at Kakariki. The work will be undertaken by a party of 12 men who are daily transported between Marton and Kakariki by bus. The work is expected to engage them for about 10 weeks. The Kakariki works were refitted (luring the war with the refrigerating machinery from the Port Bowen wreck at Castlecliff, as an emergency store for exportable dairy produce. It was not, however, necessary to use it for this, although installations and repairs had been finished.
