FLYING CASUALTY
SUB-LIEUT. J. A. CLEMANCE Sub-Lieut. (A.) John A. Clemance, who was killed on July 7, during final training exercises with the Fleet Air Arm, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Clemance, of the Schoolhouse Upokongaro. According to advice received from the Air Ministry, Clemance was with his squadron over the Bristol Channel, abotu six miles from shore, when his aircraft was seen to dive into the sea. He was last seen making a parachute descent An immediate search was made, to no avail. Born at New Plymouth 20 years ago Clemance was educated at the Alton, Horopito and Upokongaro Schools, and from 1939 to 1942 attended the Wanganui Technical College! In 1943 he joined the R.N.Z.A.F., and trained at. Ashburton, Blenheim, Rotorua and Taieri. After further training in Canada and England, last February he volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm. Always interested in sporv Clemance was a keen angler and a member of the Upokongaro Tennis and Rifle Clubs. In 1942 he played for the Technical College first fifteen and captained the squadron team while air training in Scotland.
