CYCLONE MOVES FROM N.S.W.
MERCHANT SHIP ASHORE ON QUEENSLAND REEF
Recd. 11.15 p.m. Sydney, July 17. The cyclone which caused the recent bad weather along the coast has moved away over the Tasman Sea. Seas are still rough off the north coast of New South Wales but they will moderate by to-morrow. A Brisbane message reports that a 7000-ton Allied merchant ship ’. i ch ran aground on a reef off the Queensland coast yesterday might become a total ioss. The ship is well up on the coral and prospects of refloating her are not bright. Weather conditions are still not favourable for transferring the crew from the stranded ship, which was travelling in ballast when it struck the reef.
Rescue ships are dashing to the aid of the ship. One rescue ship has already reached the stricken vessel and a salvage tug is on the way. Heavy weather is preventing the transfer of the crew to a ship which is standing by the stricken vessel, which is almost high and dry on a reef. Preliminary reports indicated that there was little hope of refloating and there was anxiety about the safety of the crew unless the weather abated.
