WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION The Wanganui Central branch of the W.C.T.U., held its April meeting in Trinity Church Parlour, Mrs. Duxtield being in the chair. There was a good attendance despite the weather. Mrs. Mercer lead devotions. The business of the day was Mrs. Grinsted’s report as delegate to the annual convention, this year held at Dunedin. It was decided that at next month's meeting, kept by the W.C.T.U. as Peace Day, instead of a special address there should be general discussion on the "Licencing Committee's findings,” as all efforts to solve the perpetual drink problem are a definite and urgent form of work for peace and rehabilitation. Afternon tea was served and a successful bring and buy stall conducted. WOMEN’S CLUB PATRIOTIC WORK Four hundred and eighty unaddressed parcels, large quantities of woollen goods and other materials for prisoners of war, Red Cross workers, refugees, air raid victims, and cash contributions to Air Force and merchant seamen’s relief organisations, the A.N.A. Club and the Red Cross amounting to more than £4l were among the patriotic gestures of the patriotic committee of the Wanganui Women’s Club last year, it was reported at the annual meeting. Of the £4l collected from members, £l2 17s 6d was for the Air Force, £5 for the A.N.A. Club, £l2 for the merchant seamen, and £ll 5s for the Red Cross shop day. For tne District Patriotic Committee the committee made 47 pullovers. 35 pairs of sox, 10 dozen hussifs, 73 scarves and mittens. For the Red Cross were made 95 pairs sox, 36 pullovers, 273 dysentery pads, 30 pairs pyjamas, seven bed capes, three dressing gowns, 23 babies’ nightgowns, and two petticoats. Gifts to the Red Cross for air raid victims were 18 girls’ nightgowns and 19 girls’ blouses. For the prisoners of war were given 20 pairs of sox. As during the coming year the committee intends to work for air raid and V-bomb victims, as well as for people in occupied countries, it would be glad to see a larger attendance o. members at the sewing meetings every Tuesday afternoon, it was stated at the meeting. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES MONTHLY MEETING AT BULLS. The monthly meeting of the Bulls Women’s institute was well attended. Mrs. Eyles, who presided, extended a welcome to visitors and hoped sick members would soon be well. It was a social afternoon and the following items were very much enjoyed by all present. Piano duet, Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Carson; song. “Until,” Mrs. Eyles and Mrs. Tricker; recitations. “Twins,” and “Trials of a Mother,” Mrs. Sanson; a sketch, “Father's Trousers,” Mesdames Sanson, Stewart, McGregor and O’Brien. A play, “The Family Group,’ w’as a huge sucess and members enjoyed a good laugh. Those taking part were: Mesdames Eyles, Stewart, McGregor, Sanson, Carter and Miss Scott. Mrs. Tricker gave an item with her ukelele, and everyone enjoyed an impromptu community sing. The new committee, acting as hostesses, served afternon tea. Results of competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs. Huddleston, 1; Mrs. Stewart, 2; Miss Richards, 3. Antirrhinum, Mrs. O’Brien, 1; Mrs. Tricker. 2; Mrs. Coleman, 3. Parcels will be packed on April 18. The committee meeting will be held April 17, at the Clifton Hall. The competition for to-day will be a sugar bag apron. MAKIRIKIRI INSTITUTE. The April meeting of the Makirikiri Women’s Institute was held recently, there being a fair attendance. The delegates appointed to the Wanganui istrict Federation meeting were Mrs. Crowley and Mrs. W. Howard). Mrs. Gower (Wanganui) gave a very interesting talk on native plants and how to grow them. Mrs. Laird was also a visitor and they were both thanked. The result, of the best flower competition was: Mrs. Thomas 1, Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Crowley 2, equal, Mrs. Clemance 3. Next month's competitions will be a bowl of chrysanthemums and the best flower. In conjunction with the institute the children’s Garden Circle had competitions, results of which are as follows.
