RECORD HORSE FAIR

HIGH PRICES REALISED With buyers present from all centres of lhe North Island operating freely, as may be gathered from the lad that. 52 trucks were despatched to different destinations, the first autumn horse fair on Saturday resulted in an excellent sale, report lhe auctioneers, Messrs. Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd. They offered an excellent yarding of 311 horses, the property of 72 vendors, and there were 142 individual purchasers. Only 12 horses remained unsold. A feature of the sale was the excellent. competition for good hacks, either broken or unbroken, vendors’ reserves in some instances being exceeded bv 100 per cent. Messrs. Glenn Bros, half-bred Arab three-year-old unbroken hacks elicited ke>' competition, and the consignment, of 17, more than half of them greys, averaged £24. Top price was £37. paid by Mr. E. J. Rogers, of Ngaruavvahia. who also bought three other lots in this consignment. Several other vendors topped the £2O mark for good unbroken hacks. Good unbroken ponies also sold well at up to £'23. Although at low' figures compared with the prices paid for ha(*''s, unbroken draughts and spring carters sold at a slight advance on last season's spring fairs. Top price for broken hacks was £35 10s, obtained by Mr. E. Sergeant, Hunterville, for a grev five-vear-old filly. A number exceeded £2O. and Mr. J. McAree, of Waverley. sold a child’s pony, a six-year-old dannled grey, at £27’los. The draught entry, the smallest for some considerable 'time, sold well, prices being slightlv in advance of spring fairs'for a very mixed Quality yarding. The second autumn horse fair, set down for Saturday. April 21. has already attracted so many entries that the catalogue has been closed. Following is the range of prices for last Saturday’s fair:— Unbrokens.—-Well-bred hacks. £2l to £26; half-bred Arabs (Glenn Bros.), £l5 to £37 (average £24); average hacks, £l2 10s to £2O: poor. £7 to £11: good ponies, £l5 to £l7 10s; fair. £lO 1o £l3 10s. Draughts, £6 to £10: halfdraughts and spring carters. £4 1o £l2. Draught mares and foals. £6 to £lO. Broken Section—Good ponies. £lB to £27 10s: average, £lO to £l6. Hacks, good w'ell-bred. £25 to £37: good, £lB 1o 245; average and over 7 years, £l2 to £l6 10s; aged and noor, £5 to £lO 10s Ponv stallions, 15,gns. to 20gns.
