JAPANESE LOSSES
Reed. 11.40 New York, Oct. 17. "American forces have destroyed 73 Japanese ships and 670 aircraft since October 9, averaging 10 ships and 100 aircraft daily,” said Admiral Nimitz, in a broadcast to the Herld-Tribune. "The results would have been mucn greater except for the scarcity of profitable targets. Enemy air opposition was comparatively light in the early stages of the assault, but grew more intense over the Formosa and Manila areas."
Admiral Nimitz. pointed out. that, in recent days Americans had heard the good news about the fleet’s strikes close to the heart of Japan, but it would be a grievous error to think such successes gave rise to hope for an early end to the war against Japan.
