MAXIMUM PENALTY IMPOSED IN ONE CASE “You have had six previous convictions, and I have to impose the maximum fine of £100," said Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., at the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday to Peter A. Healey, who was charged with keeping a common gaming house in Guyton Street. Defendant was given time to pay the fine. Detective-Sergeant J. K. Robertson said the day on which the detectives visited the premises three race meetings were being held in various centres. Bets were being taken by an assistant and these amounted to £B6 ss. Edward Sherwood Thompson (Mr. W. R. Brown), Healey’s assistant, was fined £lO and costs. A £75 FINE IMPOSED. For using his residence as a common gaming house, Reginald Rogerson (Mr. R. S. Withers) was convicted and fined £75. It was stated that when the detectives arrived 97 bets had been taken, amounting to £4l 2s 6d. Defendant had three previous convictions. The magistrate said that if defendant came before the Court, aeain on a similar offence the maximum fine would be imposed.
