COMBINED HUNTS
MEETING AT HAWERA ON SATURDAY Keen interest is being displayed in the combined meeting to be held at the Hawera Racecourse on Saturday by the Egmont-Wanganui and Taranaki Hunt Clubs, ano the excellent acceptances appear to provide a guarantee that the racing will be full of interest. Eight races are carded, and there will be extra measure with the Weraroa Stakes divided into two fields of fifteen each. Starting times lor the meeting are: 11.30, Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles: 12.10, Weraroa Stakes; 12.55, Waihi Hack Handicap; 1.35. Combined Hunts' Steeplechase; 2.20, Halcombe Memorial Handicap; 3.0, Ladies’ Necklace Handicap; 3.45, Stratford Handicap; 4.30, Waverley Hack Handicap. Brackets for the meeting are:— Wenaroa Stakes: Dawn Flight and Cleo, Mr. Cute and Prakash, Light Tea and Longswood, Black Salve and Political Boy, Golden Ash and Sivam, Miss Corvette and Houdini. Combined Hunts’ Cup Steeplechase: Pekoe and Colonel Plato, Last Match and Ngamotu. Horses trained or owned in Wanganui, and engaged on Saturday, include Rehearsal, Kathey and Alright, in the Waihi Hack, Jackets in the Weraroa Stakes, Red Chief in the Ladies' Necklace. and Keite-He in the Waihi Hack and Waverley Hack. Apocalypse, engaged in the Weraroa Stakes, is owned in Wanganui but trained at Hawera. Under adverse weather conditions on Tuesday morning at Hawera. semifinal gallops were done on the course, proper with the trestles 40ft. out and' a bitterly cold wind against the horses over the last three furlongs. Greek Art and Golden Ash finished together over five furlongs run in 1.9 4-ssec, I Eeau Fox dashed off in front of Master Francis at the five-furlong peg, | but Master Francis improved over the final stages to be running the better at the finish. The gallop took 1.10 1-5. Master Francis has improved considerably since being under G. Moore’s care. Silver Chain, going well under his light weight, ran five furlongs in 1.9. Rebate and Vermette, after running the first two furlongs in 26sec., took 1.9 i for five furlongs. From a slow beginning, Miss Corvette and Houdini registered 1.11 h for five furlongs, the last three being run in 43sec. Miss Corvette showed to advantage. Earras galloped half a mile in 56sec. Etta Quex sprinted two furlongs on the sand in 26sec. Aiderman. General Saleve and War Effort were restricted to pace work on the inside. The two-year-old ■ Cantain Crusoe sprinted three furlongs down the back in 41sec. Captain Crusoe was accompanied by Amigo, who afterwards galloped half a mile in 57sec. Black Plato and Peter’s Choice completed five furlongs in I.Bi, the best of the morning over the distance. Peter’s Choice showed to advantage over the concluding stages. The maiden Comrade, going from the seven-furlong peg and having the advantage of the wind, galloped half a mile in 55sec.
Gay Anne, finishing against the wind, look 57sec. for four furlongs.
Battledress and Apocalypse galloped five furlongs in 1.10, with Battledress in front at the finish.
Adrigoole, in a working gallop over a mile, came home the last two furlongs in 28sec.
