MAGISTRATE’S COURT The dangerous practice of riding bicycles without lights after sunset was pointed out by Traffic Inspector C. M. Horniblow, at the Magistrate s Court, Marton, on Tuesday. Several complaints had been lodged to the denartment, and also of the practice of riding two and three abreast during the daytime, he told the Court. Leniency had been extended in the past on "account of the lack of batteries, but these were now available. This was more of a test case to serve as a warning to other cyclists breaking the law, stated the inspector. In view of the facts as explained by the inspector, Mr. A. Coleman, SM., took a lenient view of the offence and fined a first offender ss. On a charge of allowing a cow to wander at large a first offender was fined 10s. On a charge of driving a motorlorry without due care and attention on the Wanganui Road on June 5, S. Andrews pleaded guilty. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed. Mr. J. R. L. Stanford appeared for the defendant. UPPER TUTAENUI TABLE TENNIS CLUB More than 20 members of the Upper Tmaenui laoie lenms Uluu were present to entertain five members ol the Marton Ciuo, led by Mr. Geo. Hunter, who paid a visit on rriday evening to the Tutaenui Club. No attempt wau made to arrange a match, but friendly games were held and many very keen doubles contests were played. Members of the Tutaenui Club benefited greatly from the much superior play oi the visitors. The club hopes to see more of them in the near future. The committee were very pleased to sec so many present and were gratified to learn that the visitors spent a most enjoyable evening. Play was enthusiastic, and interest siiowed no sign or flagging when the Marton Club members left after 11 pm. The winnerc of the stroke competition last week were: B grade, Mrs. A. Rhodes; C. grade, Mrs. Swalnson. MARTON ROTARY CLUB The speaker at Marton Rotary Club on Monday night was the Rev. D. Rosenthal), who gave a humorous and interesting talk on the origin ol laughter, and kept his audience in a simmer of laughter throughout his talk. Rotarian W. McCully extended thanks to the speaker on behalf of the club, which was carried by acclamation. AIR FORCE RELATIONS Mrs. F. J. Christensen has received from headquarters another consignment ol Air Force wool to be knitted into comforts for airmen overseas and anyone willing to assist in this good work should apply to Mrs. Christensen, ’phone 2225. The A.F.R. knitting circle meets every alternate Wednesday afternoon in the W.W.S.A. Rooms, High Street, where new memebrs will be welcome. LONG NIGHT DANCE TO-MORROW NIGHT Final arrangements have been made foi the long-night dance organised by the Marton A. and P. Association tomorrow (Thursday) night in the Empire Hall. The proceeds from the dance will be devoted to the hall budding fund of the combined St. John Ambulance and Boy Scouts— a worthy object that should attract, a record attendance. Cliff Anderson’s dance band, from Palmerston North, will supply a programme of the latest and brightest dance music. The supper will be under the supervision of a .strong ladies’ committee, and every effort will be made to please the patrons.
