SANDY'S CORNER
OPEN LETTER TO HARBOUR BOARD. Dear Harbour Board: We have read in the Press that the concrete blocks which were io be used in case of a Japanese invasion arc to be dumped into the river to enable steamers to come gaiety up the channel. We hope, sirs, tnat >ou are aware of all deep, tactical thinking, the ruddy cursing and the sweat which flowed from good Home Guardsmen in the creation of those blocks and the siting of them. They have a touching, historical significance, and we think the Home Guard should be consulted as io where they should be placed in the river. In fact, there should be a parade of the Guard to lay the first stone, which might well be engraved—“ Built, under the military direction of the Home Guard to keep Japs out. but diverted, without baptism of tire, to bring steamers in.” It would be most cruel and unbecoming of the board io coldly dump the first block down. We suggest that the first stone be laid as the result of a general alarm, sounded, say, an hour nr two before dawn. You could make zero hour to .suit yourselves. 11 would be a good lest of whether the Japs -uld surprise us or not .... Yours “Sandy."
