CITY COUNCIL MEETS
HELP WITH REHABILITATION PROBLEMS An assurance that the Wanganui City Council would co-operate to the fullest extent possible with rehabilitation problems was given by the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, when a letter from the Wanganui - Rangitikei PoweiBoard was received by the City Council at its monthly meeting last night. In addition to receiving a deputation from ratepayers, protesting against the erection of a crematorium in wartime, the council dealt with a wide range of subjects. The Mayor presided, also in attendance being Crs. T. S. Russell, E. W. Merewether, S. J. Harris, R. P. Andrews, J. C. Batt, A. J. Pritchard, A. R. Donaldson, W. S. N. Rennie, J. F. Broad, T. N. Dickson and G. E. Bennett. Leave of absence was granted Cr. G. P. Hawkins. Applications for permission to hold street day appeals in 1945 were granted as follows: —Wanganui K.S.A., Friday, April 20; Army Relations, May 30; St. John Free Ambulance, September; Wanganui Branch New Zealand Crippled Children Society, October; S.P.C.A., November.
Decisions arrived at by adopting committee reports were:— Street Improvements. ■ — Several streets in the locality between Victoria Avenue and the river -have been inspected with a view to improvements, and the Works Committee recommenu that these questions be considered when the council is undertaking other work in this part of the city. A petition from ratepayers for a slab rootpath in Taranaki Street, Wanganui East, was deterred till the programme of works for the next current iinancial year is under review. The city engineer (Mr. Row) will inspect a portion of the footpath in Alma Road, near Gonville Avenue, with a view to effecting improvements by widening, and will report back to the committee. Another matter for consideration next year is the construction of a lootpath in Tregenna Street, Castlecliff
Removal of Street Light.—A suggestion has been made that with a view to improving visibility for tramway passengers waiting at the stop opposite the Aramoho Rost Office, one oi the street lights be removed to a more convenient position. The chairman oi the Tramways Committee (Cr Harris), the Mayor and the engineer (Mr. Row) are to inspect the locality and submit a report.
Victoria Avenue Tram Stop.—The chairman (Cr Harris) and the engineer (Mr. Row) reported to the Tramways I Committee regarding an alteration to the tram stop on the upper side of the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Liverpool Street. In future this stop is to be located on the lower side, opposite the butcher shop. Tramway Shelter Shed. —The Tramway Committee reported that the Mayor and tramway engineer (Mr. Row) have been deputed to make further inquiries al the Tawhero School regarding the suggestion that a shelter-sited be erected at the corner of Puriri and Totara Streets,
