ROAD, RAIL. SEA AND AIR TRANSPORT

WANGANUI’S FUTURE ROYAL COMMISSION SUGGESTED Among suggestions made to the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce by Mr. W. S. N. Rennie, with the object o£ planning and co-ordinating transportation progress in Wanganui—rail, road, sea and air—is one that a Royal Commission be set up to go into these matters and assist in ftamlng a plan. Mr. Rennie suggested that a confer-' ence of representatives of the chamber, local bodies, business firms, and members of Parliament should discuss fully the co-ordination o£ all forms of transport in the city and district. The matters which such a conference should consider were listed by Mr. Rennie under the following heads:— To deviate the Wellington-New Plymouth railway in such a manner as to place Wanganui on the main line. The deviation to be such as to provide Wanganui with the best possible railway facilities, adjacent to the city's future industrial area, and to provide the most satisfactory arrangements for working overseas and coastal shipping. To establish a modern aerodrome with long runways, so as to provide terminal facilities for overseas air traffic; this question to be considered in relation to the railway deviation. To consider the advisability o£ effecting economy and improvement by the concentration of shipping facilities in one place, such as Castlecliff. To discuss the future site for a new town bridge and any necessary alterations to the adjoining highways system. To urge the Government that a Royal Commission be set up to assist in formulating such a plan. To recommend that no major transportation proposal should be proceeded with until due consideration has beqn given to it by the Royal Commission. Those proposals were submitted to the railway committee of the chamber for report.
