HIGH COMMISSIONER’S VISIT DEFERRED
Regret that he was unable to visit Wanganui on September 14 or 21 for the quarterly luncheon of the Chamber of Commerce was expressed by Dr W. A. Riddell, High Commissioner in New Zealand for Canada, in a letter received by the chamber at its executive meeting last night. Dr. Riddell added that it may be possible for him to address the chamber at its succeeding quarterly luncheon. It was decided to make arrangements for another speaker.
Shags at Taupo. While fishing is forbidden to anglers on Taupo Lake and the surrounding rivers until the season opens again in November, large numbers of shags this winter are industriously fishing the lake. One resident, with long experience, said that he had not seen so many shags before, and he gave it as his opinion that each shag would probably catch at least 10 young trout a day. The shags are difficult to approach from the water, and the many distant and isolated hays afford them almost complete freedom to continue their depredations.
