7000 CALLED FOR SERVICE

THE ARMED FORCES MAINLY 18-YEAR-OLDS EXPLANATION AS TO APPEALS (P.A.) Wellington, July 28. A further Gazette notice, calling up for service in the Armed Forces some 7000 men is published to-day. The majority of them are youths whe have attained the age of 18 years since the issue of the previous ballot in November. The Minister of National Service, Mr. McLaggan, said that under the present policy these youths would not be required for full-time mooilisation ’ before reaching the age of 20, except | those who had volunteered for, and were accepted by, the Air Force. In those circumstances, no useful purpose could be served meantime in appealing on the ground of undue hardship, or py reason of occupation. Adequate 'aunties Cor appeal in such cases would be afforded, wherever desired, Dnor to any mobilisation following the attainment of the age of 20. The Gazette included, however, numbers of men who. by reason of ? be called immediately for t? !u ime serv^ce > and in those cases, if there were grounds for seeking postponement, it would be necessary for the right of appeal to be exercised without delay. The Minister also B? in t e( J. that youths and others in the ballot who were not fully mobilised at an early date would be subject later to selection for one month’s service in the Territorial Force. A special notice would be given in such SA nd i her ? i ater would he an opportunity for lodging appeals. lbe ™ mbe r of men railed from each military area is: Auckland 1328 367 r wn-°’ J Vha X arei Han-JUon 367, Wellington 903, Wanganui 471 NaP Mo s ??'
