ARTS AND CRAFTS

PICTURES, TALK ANO MUSIC RECORD ATTENDANCE AT MEETING “Design for Michael Angelo and the Mast ers of lhe Fifteen Century was the teclmiqiE of space filling. The Church was the great art patron and the frescoes of the Vatican had to fit Into the wall spaces that were provided. To-day. the frame is made to fit th. picture.” said Mr. H. C. Jenkins, at the Arts and Crafts Society on Friday night. "In all great pictrues there is a foundation scheme upon which the artist, constructs his picture, and although, as Sir Joshua Reynolds remarked, ‘rules are made from pictures, not pictures from rules,’ it was nevertheless helpful for lesser mortals to seek the aid of those rules.” Portraiture and scenic subjects were dealt with in a series of sketches, and the scheme of several well-known pictures were analysed and shown how they were built up- In one instance it was demonstrated how the picture could have achieved a more effective result by adopting a different station point and more nearly conforming to the basic design. Each step in the talk was illustrated by charcoal drawings made by the speaker. The talk was followed by .a musical programme, which was arranged by Mr. Gordon Mcßeth, the contributors to which were Mr. R. H. Tizard, Mrs. Bellringer, Mrs. Berry, and Master John Young, also a sextette—Mesdames Bellringer, Williams. Rail, Taylor, Valentine, and Yeatman. Mrs. Tizard and Mr. Mcßeth played the accompaniments. A gallery of recently produced pictures was on view, including ‘Longacre ’-' "Castlecliff Beach to Kai Iwi" and “Rangit-oto," by Constance Collins, “Paekakariki,” a tree study and the artist's home, by Leigh Treadwell, “A Bach” and "Auckland Windmill,' by Mr. Doust, portrait, landscape by Mrs. Trollope, mountain and river scenes by Mrs Macfarlane and AU Saints’ Church bv Mrs. Hogg. A beautiful piece of embroiderey work was much admired. There was a record attendance at. Hie society's meeting and a number of new members were enrolled. Mr. C. L. Duigan presided.
