MONETARY INFLATION IN GREECE

As a result of the German occupation, Greece is suffering the worst monetary inflation in history, in addition to extreme starvation, reports the New York Times Cairo correspondent. The pound sterling was worth 90 drachma before the Axis invasion. Now it is worth 2,000,000 drachma. Current prices in Athens, all in thousands of drachma, are: Newspaper: 200 One cigarette 20 A pair of shoes 500,000 A loaf of bread 2000 Housewives carry their money in huge suitcases.
