HUNTERVILLE TOWN BOARD

APPEAL BY CHAIRMAN (0.C.) Hunterville, June 13. An appeal for co-operation and a “happy family” spirit was made by the newly-elected chairman of the Hunterville Town Board (Cr. R. A. Gordon) in addressing the new board at its first meeting for indary business last night. Cr. Gordon commences his [fourth term as chairman and his 25th year as a member of the board. There .would be criticism from time to time, (he said, but let it be constructive criticism and based on facts. Only in that way would the best interests of the town be served. He depricated a Campaign of ill-informed criticism fjrom a certain quarter outside the Hoard and quoted facts and figures in an endeavour to prove such criticism unjustified and unfair. “We are here t|> serve the ratepayers; it is our honourable duty. Let. us discharge it with honour, always rising above such idle talk which is petty and personal,” Cr. Gprdon concluded. The District Manpower Officer (Wanganui) advised that owing to Apny objections the release of Pte. L. Stewart from military service to enable him to set- up in business in Hunterville as a boot repairer was declined. At an earlier meeting the board had asked for the release of this soldier, who is Grade 111 in health, as the absence of a boot repairer in the town was causing considerable inconvenience. The letter was received. The foreman (Mr. A. Wills) reported that general maintenance work had beeln carried out. There was 31ft. of water in the Rangitira reservoir and the Glenmorven reservoir was up to Ihp spillway. In reply to Cr. Callwood, the chairman said that metal for Marshall Road was already on order. It was decided to place an order for nine yards of fine metal for top-dress-ing footpaths. The foreman is to be asked to attend future meetings. Cr. Dickie reported having attended the revival meeting of the Beautifying Society and he outlined what had taken place. The society, he said, asked for the full co-operation of the board in maintaining the planted areas. The chairman congratulated Cr. Dickie on his election as president of the society and thanked Cr. Waldron for attending the meeting as representative of the hoard. It was unanimously resolved to give the society every possible co-ope”ation and encouragement. ‘At the suggestion of Cr.
