LONDONTOWN’S “QUEEN OF SONG” VOCAL CONTEST

CPEI'.dNG COMPETITORS MAKE THEIR DEBUT Londontown’s enterprise was again evident last evening, when the “Queen of Song” vocal contest opened a week’s season at the Majestic Theatre. Competitors received an enthusiastic ovation from the large audience. The contestants were Mrs. P. Moulday, Miss B. McKie, Miss A. Newton Hood, and Miss A. Mooran. Each was gowned by Londontown and the entire stage effect was a feature of the contest. Mrs. C. Mcßride rendered most sympathetic accompaniments, and Mr. J. Puryer commences his duties as musical adjudicator. In introducing the competitors, the manager, Mr. Basil Prince, .said that approximately 10 months ago, in conjunction with the management of Londontown, it was decided to institute a new type of entertainment, called, the “Deanna Durbin Talent Quest.” The public response, and the high standard set by the competitors was a revelation, and it was determined that when another suitable picture came alone the innovation would be repeated. This has been done with the intention of developing Wanganui’s talent, of which there seems to be ample, and also in the hope that something really novel could be provided for many patrons and friends. Mr. Prince concluded: by sincerely thanking all who had made the staging of the “Queen of Song Competition” possible, and trusted that it would be interesting and enjoyable for all. Each night competitors will appear, their names will be advertised daily in the local press. On Thursday, June 22, the finalists will be announced, and on Saturday, 24th, the presentation of prizes takes place. The contest is creating tremendous interest and those who love good music ara urged to reserve their seats immediately. The AcaC.emy Award Film “The Phantom of the Opera,” will be screened each evening, and it is undoubtedly the picture entertainment of the year.
