FINAL MEETING OF COUNCIL RAILW AY W ATER SUPPLY. At the final meeting of th e Marton Borough Council on Wednesday evening the Land Officer, N.Z. Railways, wrote advising that the department had decided lo accept a renewal of Grant No. 362 in respect of water supply for a term of ten years from Octo- , oer 1. 1944. The Mayor stated that this decision by the Railway Department will settle a question that has given the council very much concern. It had been sug- ■ gested that the department would secure its supply from another source and seeing that its requirements are approximately 28 million gallons per year, the proposed building of the second dam in the Upper Tutaenui area will be fully justified in view of the Railway Department’s decision. New Gas Mains. Mr. A. J. Holden, gas manager, reported that the Sin. and 71n. mains in Wellington Road and Rroadway have been completed and the old main in Tutaenui connected with the 7in. main. The 12 chains of 2in. main Kited from Tutaenui Road hav R now been laid in Harris Street. Three chains of Ifcn. main have been laid in Upper Beaven Street lo replace the lin. main and two chains of lin. mains have been replaced with Uin. pipe in lower Beaven Street. During Ihe past week the 4in. and 3in. cast iron mains lifted from Broadway have been cleaned in readiness for an immediate start in Station Road next summer, as it is my intention to leave the balance of the main laying programme until then. General Business. Messrs. M. A. Henderson, A. Hunter and W. A. Price advised that they had installed septic tanks and requesting adjustment of sanitation fees, which was agreed to as from April 1, 1944. The district engineer, N.Z. Railways, also advised that a septic tank had been installed at the stationmaster's residence. The Highways Board submitted a modified plan and specifications covering the replacement, of the present wooden culvert on Station Road by a reinforced concrete structure, which was approved of bv the council and a further estimate is to be submitted. The State Advances Corporation reported the erection of a caravan shelter on Mr. Granville Smith's propertv on Robert Street without a building permit and asking the council to take action. Th e correspondence is to be forwarded to the corporation for further advice. The Highways Board wrote asking the council to submit proposals of estimated expenditure on highways for the current year.—Referred to overseer. Cr. Williams referred to a recent break in the water main on Tutaenui Road which had caused a good deal of inconvenience and expense, to a ratepayer on account of an air lock and the council decided that in the event of any further breaks that the overseer notify the town clerk who would notify hotelkeepers, railway, restaurants, civic buildings, etc., of the breakage so that they could take the necessary steps to obviate any further trouble. ~, The Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) presided over Crs. G. B. Gregory, T. Barton, K Fowler, A. Mclndoe. A. J. B. Sicely, J.' R. Howard, W. J. Mogridge, K. A. Williams and Mr. C. C. McDonald (town clerk). RANGITIKEI HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. The annual general meeting of the Rangitikei Hockey Association was held on May 22. The president (Mr. W. G. Aitken) was in the chair, and presided over Messrs. Barton, Grade, Wing, Mogridge, Signal, Miss Wilkie and the secretary (Mrs. A. Wing). It was decided that the association would again go into recess, and that an effort would be made to arrange friendly games if possible. The secretary was instructed to write and convey the sympathy ot the association to Mrs. Carpenter and family in the loss of Mr. Carpentei, who was a member of the association for many years, MARTON LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. The following is the draw for a Stableford bogey competition to be played on the Marton links, to-mor-row, Saturday, May 27. Members are asked to note that they play in threes. A reminder is given to Marlon relatives of prisoners of war, that a meeting will be held in the Red Cross Training Centre, High Street, on Tuesday, May 30 at 2.30 p.m. It is hoped that ther e will be a good attendance. LADIES’ GOLF. A friendly match between the ladies of the Marton and Hawkestone Goll Clubs was played on the Hawkestone ' links on Wednesday afternoon in perfect weather, and the links in good order. Following are the results, Marlon members being mentioned first: Mrs Morrison and Mrs. Fowler halved, Mrs. Purser lost to Mrs. Franke, Mrs. Wh’tford lost to Mrs. Bal], Mrs. Grut won from Mrs. McLean, Mrs. Mogrxlge won from Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Glasgow lost to Miss Cummins, Mrs. Henderson lost, to Mrs. Frederick, Mrs. Caithness won from Mrs. Gracie, Mrs. Frost lost to Mrs. Fogelberg. LEAP YEAR DANCE AT tutaenui The grand Leap Year dance in the Tutaenui Hall on Wednesday evening in aid of the hall funds, proved very < njoyable and successful. A large attendance danced to music supplied by Mr. T. Hartley, and extras were played by Miss Voelkernng. Mrs. Vile and Mr. L Vile. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. Walsh and Miss Meads, and a spot waltz by Mr. M. C. Amadio and Miss L. Vile. The competition donated bv Mr. P. Jenkins was won by Mr. R. Griffin (Sanson). The supper, under the direction of the ladies’ committee, was again up to the usual high standard. Miss Joan Fowler made an efficient M.C. HOSPITAL BOARD ELECTION Mr. Geo. A. McLean, who is a candidate for the Hospital Board, addressed two meetings in Marton on Wednesday evening. The first in the Presbyterian Hall. Marton Junction, add the second in the Druids’ Hall, Marlon. The candidate dealt with various matters connected with Hospital Board administration, including the proposed new hospital in Marton. Mr. McLean assured the Marton people that, if elected, he would undertake lo see that the needs of the Marlon area were well catered for when the hospital in Marton was established, particularly in regards io adequate accommodation for patients requiring ordinary hospital treatment and minor
