SHARP ENEMY RAIDS
REPULSED IN ITALY casualtieTinflicted London, Apiil IS. Enemy raiding parties against the Eighth Army and Filth Army fronts were driven off, reports to-day’s Allied communique from Italy. The Canadians repulsed an enemy raid in the Adriatic sector. Allied patrols and. artillery were active all over the front. Reuter's correspondent at Allied Headquarters says: Canadian Eighth Army troops repulsed a sharp German raid against the Creechio area, near the Adriatic. The German attack was heavily supported by tank _ and machine-gun fire and a preliminary j artillery and mortar bombardmen'. The Canadians inflicted casualties. Fifth Army troops in the Anzio area captuw.a an outpost four mile. 1 ' | inland. A German raid in this area . was driven off with enemy casualties. The Germans vigorously attacked Allied positions in the Trelle area, north of Cassino, but were thrown back in hand-to-hand fighting. Describing the three heavy enemj ; thrusts against the Allied lines in Italy during the past 24 hours, Reuter's correspondent at Allied Headquarters states that an attack against the Canadians, five miles inland from the Adriatic, occurred in darkness afUr heavy artillery fire. The Canadians, in a fierce struggle, threw back the German infantry and tanks after inflicting casualties. Another strong raiding force attacked | Aided mountain positions one and ihalf miles east of Terelle and north 1 of Cassino. Knives, bayonets and 1 grenades were used in the fighting that swept up and down the rocky ’ slopes. A number of Allied troops fell before the Germans were thrown from the mountainside and driven back. A third thrust against the west flank of the beachhead perimeter was repulsed with casualties. Fifth Army, troops in the beachhead area, captured an enemy outpost intact.
