COMPENSATION FOR LOST VEGETABLE CROPS

WAR INSURANCE FUND SUGGESTED (P.A.) Gisborne, March 10. Vegetable growers whose crops had been wiped out by Tuesday's flood met Mr. P. W. Smailfield, director of the Fields Division, who is investigating the damage. They made a strong recommendation that, the Government should treat flood damage as it would treat earthquake damage from the War Damage Insurance Fund. An outline of losses given to Mr. Small field showed that many growers had lost everything and had no resources left, even their food being destroyed in some cases. This was particularly so with Chinese erowers, whose supplies of rice as their staple food have been lost. An official estimate of losses among vegetable growers included 300 acres of kumaras, 80 acres of carrots, 40 acres of cabbages and 20 acres of cauliflower, while 20 acres of tomatoes are a partial Joss. These are vegetable losses only and do not include farm crops.
