WAR AGAINST U-BOATS

Recd. 7.45 p.m, London. Feb. 9. A joint statement regarding Uhoat warfare in January has been issued under the authority of President Roosevelt and Mr. Churchill. It says: “The year opened with a very satisfactory first month for the Allies. More. U-boats were destroyed than in December, despite the limited opportunities to attack, because of the extreme caution now exercised by them. This was accomplished by the unremitting offensive action taken by our surface and air forces. Th* amount of merchant ship tonnage sunk by U-boats in January is amongst the lowest monthly figures for the whole of the war.”
