‘THE TERROR” DEAD

FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN CRICKETER. Recd. 6 p.m. Sydney. Jan. 3. The death has occurred of Mr. C. T. B. Turner, aged 81. He was one ofthe greatest figures in Australian cricket, was the finest bowler of his day, and was known as "The Terror.” He was the only bowler to take 100 wickets in a season in first-class-games in Australia, having taken 106 in 1887 and 1888. Going to England immediately afterwards he captured 314 wickets at 11.12 each on tour. In Test matches, he had the splendid figures of 101 wickets at 16.53, and In all first-class games he claimed 1061 wickets at a cost of 13 runs each. Sturdily built, Mr. Turner was a master of length and spin. He was deadly on a wicket that gave him any assistance. He first sprang into prominence at the age of 19, when he routed a touring English team, capturing 17 wickets in two innings. In one innings, he took all 10 wicketa for 36.
