Sergeant L. Wilson, of the Christchurch Police, has been appointed to Apia, Western Samoa.

Captain M. M. Corner, reported wounded in action, is well known throughout the Dominion as a former All Black, having represented New Zealand on the Rugby Held for many years. He toured England with ihe 1935 All Black side. Between 1929 and 1935 he represented Auckland on 4o occasions as half-back.

Lieutenant-Colonel C. L. Pleasants, M.C., reported wounded in action, with the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. is a member of the teaching staff of the Wanganui Collegiate School, and has been overseas since the beginning of the war. He is a former teacher of St. George's Preparatory School, where he took a keen interest in the school Scout troop, in 1938 he made a comprehensive tour oi Europe.

Sergeant Frederick Edward Beckett, who is reported killed in action while serving with the 2nd. N.Z.E.F., was born in Wanganui 26 years ago. He was an old boy of the Wanganui Collegiate School, where he was prominent at Rugby football and cricket, 'being a member of the first fifteen and first eleven. After leaving school he engaged in farming. As a violinist he achieved considerable skill.

Mr. W. C. Hyde, horticulturist of the Department ot Agriculture in Wellington, has retired after 19 years’ service. The author ot many pamphlets on horticulture, Mr. Hyde was associated with the late director of horticulture, Mr. J. A. Campbell, in work which led to the establishment of the tobacco-growing industry in New Zealand. Mr. Hyde has been a member of the examining hoard of ihe Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture since its inception in 1928.

A well-known Waikato pioneer. Mr. John Vickery Bryant, ot Hamilton East, has died at the of 90. Born at Clayhonger, Devonshire, Mr. Bryant spent his early years in that county, hut came to New Zealand early in 1881. He bought a farm at Kihikihi in 1883 and continued to work the property until bis retirement in 1911. Mr. Bryant is survived by his second wile and four sons and three daughteis of his first marriage. Lieutenant D. P. Lindsay, who has been killed on active service, was born 37 years ago and was educated at the Timaru Boys’ High School. He graduated from Canterbury College with his Master of Arts degree in 1936. On the outbreak of war he was a teacher on the staff of the Dannevirke High School. Lieutenant Lindsay is a former New Zealand swimming champion and one of the Dominion’s representatives at the 1928 Olympic Games held in Amsterdam. He is survived by his wife and two children, who reside in Gisborne.

The death occurred at Stratford recently ot Mr. Sinclair Macalister, a well-known solicitor, at the age of 61 years. About two years ago Mr. Macalister became ill. but in spite of his disability he carried on with his work and his other activities till the beginning oi last month, ms deatn tei.nlnates the longest legal partnership in Taranaki, Mr. Macalister and Mr. Rutherfurd having been continuously in partnership for a period of 31 years. Mr. Macalister was one of the original promoters of the solicitors' fidelity guarantee fund and his suggestions were later adopted by the Government and incorporated in an Act of Parliament, which governs the operations of the trust accounts of all solicitors in New Zealand. Mr. Macalister is survived by his wife, one son, and one daughter.
