THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENT

A southern report states that Kevin has done well since returning from the Wellington meeting, and he is expected to be a very fit horse for the Cup race at Riccarton to-morrow. He will be ridden by C. T. Wilson. Amorlad was taken out of the New Zealand Cup, as it was feared he had not been able to get through the necessary preparation for a two-mile journey. He is being kept going in view of other engagements that have been made for him.

The Champ and Home Rule, both of which are owned by Mr. S. J. New- 1 land, of Wellington, are at present carrying a very bright and robust appearance, and it will probably be some time before they are asked to figure in public. The trainer, T. R. George, of Masterton, left for Riccarton on Monday night with Silvio and Indian Sign, and the former is carrying all the polish usually associated with that capable trainer’s charges. Shvio will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins at RiccartOh. ♦ * * *

The Trentham trainer P. Burgess left for Riccarton on Wednesday. He took Tara King and Maharajah, the former being in the Derby and the latter in the Otaio Plate, and he will probably ride both horses himself. The stable apprentice, J. Garth, will be on Te Kawiti in the New Zealand Cup. Entries for the Trial Stakes at Bulls number 38. As the safety number of starters at the six furlongs post is 21, it is probable that the event will have to be decided, in which pase the stake of £l3O will be increased to £2OO, £lOO being allocated to each division.

Heavy booking for accommodation at Bulls is reported, and it is expected that the fields will be satisfactory for the race meeting on December 4. Acceptances for all events close on Monday, November 29, at 9 p.m.

. Caithness, a winner over seven furlongs at Otaki on Saturday, is engaged in the New Zealand Oaks on the second day of the Riccarton meeting, and has also been nominated for the Seymour Hack Handicap, one mile, on the same day. Caithness is by Tiderace from My Own, and is trained by H. Telford for Mr. P. Louis, of Wellington.

A very tempeting price could be obtained for Nawab, the two-year-old brother to High Caste, but the owner declines to sell. He received £7OOO for High Caste, and the offer for his two-year-old brother went to a good deal more money. ♦ * » •

Mr. J. H. Selby, who has been clerk of the course at Riccarton for a number of years, has retired as huntsman to the Christchurch Hunt Club after filling the position for over 40 years. Mr. and Mrs. Selby were presented with a cheque by the members at a social gathering.

Weight has not such a telling effect over a sprint course as in races at a mile or more. Nevertheless, very few horses have won or been placed in the Stewards’ Handicap when carrying 9.0 or more. Arrowsmith 9.13, Solfanello 9.3, Glentruin 9.6, Cadland 9.5, and Lord Nuffield 9.6 are the only winners with 9.0 or more. In the same period the place-getters with 9.0 or more are limited to Pampero 9.0, Pendies 9.4, and Paganelli 9.11 in second place, and a third place has been reached by St. Clements 9.3, Waiuku 9.2, Machine Gun 9.9, Silver Link 9.2, The Hawk 9.7, and Grand Knight 9.6.

The programme for the Woodville Jockey Club’s Diamond Jubilee meeting, to be held on the club’s course on Saturday, December 11, is an attractive one. The main exent on the card, the Woodville Diamond Jubilee Cup, carries a stake of £4OO and a silver cup valued at £4O. The trainer of the winner receives a trophy valued at £lO, presented by the club, and the rider a silver-mounted whip, presented by Mr. L. T. Russell. The open sprint will be worth £250, and the other events are well endowed. Nominations close with the secretary, Mr. W. A. Lyon, at 9 o’clock to-night.
