HAWKESTONE GOLF CLUB A FAREWELL EVENING Members of the Hawkestone Golf Club tendered a farewell evening social to Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Winchcombe on Tuesday at Gould’s i'ea Rooms on the occasion of their departure to Auckland. A Hag 500 competition was won by Mrs. K. Fowler, Miss Bush and J. Bush and C. Rofe and the consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. H. Franke, Miss F. L. Way, K. Fowler and R. C. Ball. Vocal items were given by Messrs. R. C. Ball, R. Williams, Mrs. K. Fowler, and elocutionary selections by Mrs. R. Williams, who were heartily applauded. After a dainty supper provided by the ladies, Mr. J. A. Bush (president) spoke in eulogistic terms of the service rendered by Mr. Winchcombe as retiring secretary, in addition to which he had acted on the commitee and was instrumental in placing the club on a sound financial basis. The members were sorry to lose Mr. and Mrs.'Winchcombe as playing members but wished them every success and happiness in their new sphere. On behalf of the members, the president, presented their guests with a handsome old gold quilted cushion and a hanging mirror. Mr. Winchcombe, in reply, thanked the president for his flattering remarks and remarked that it was due to the splendid co-operation of the members that the club had made a success of the removal of the links from Hawkestone to Calico Line. They enjoyed their residence of thirty years in Marton, and extended an invitation to members to call on them when on a visit to Auckland. Mr. Bush presented the Way trophy to Mr. Hunter for the best three scores in a Stableford bogey competition and congratulated the winner on being the oldest playing member, while the runner-up, Mr. W. G. Aitken, a first-year player, was only one point behind. “For They’re Jolly Good Fellows,” the National Anthem and “Auld Lang Syne” terminated a very pleasant evening. MARTON SWIMMING BATHS The Marton swimming baths have undergone a complete renovation In view of the opening of the sc jon on Saturday morning at 7 o’clock. The baths have been white-washed, new seating accommodation installed, .the cubicles, diving boards, and other parts of’ the building renovated, the wood and iron work being painted with red oxide. The baths now bear a very attractive appearance. All the footpaths have been tarred and coated with chips. The work has been carried out by Mr. George Lewis, the caretaker, under the supervision of Mr. W. J. Mogridge. COURT LITTLE JOHN, A.O.F. There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of Court Little John, A.0.F., on Tuesday evening. Bro. G. Lewis presided. The woodwards reported on the sick members. Arrangements were made for the visit to Court Roderick Dhu, Wanganui, on Tuesday, December 7. The quarterly night of Court Little John will be held on December 14. The following were nominated for officers for the ensuing half-year:— C.R., Bro. H. D. Bus'hby; S.C.R., Bro. C. C. Griffin; S.W., Bro. F. Duncan; J.W., Bro. L. G. Griffin; 5.8., Bro. W. A. Watt; J. 8., Bro. R. A. Upchurch; minute secretary, P.C.R. Bro. G. Grey; secretary, Bro. L. Mclndoe. After the meeting closed games were played and supper dispensed. MARTON MUSICAL SOCIETY There was an enthusiastic attendance by members oft the Marton Musical Society for rehearsal on Monday night under the baton of Mr. Ralph Lilly, when a numoe? of new members were enrolled. Several new choral works were reaearsed and the conductor complimented those present on their aptitude and thanked them for the keen enthusiasm displayed. As it is intended to commence orchestral works as soon as possible the society would be glad if instrumentalists would kindly join up and hand in their names to either the conductor, Mr. R. Lilly, or the secretary, Mr. A. J. Petrie. Weekly practices on Mondav nights at 8 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Hall.
