ATTACKS MADE IN CHINA Recd. 6 p.m. Chungking. Nov. 23. General Stilwell’s communique announces that Mitchells attacked two Japanese freighters off the China coast and left one vessel sinking. A gunboat and five other ships were damaged. Other Mitchells demolished administration buildings at Fort Bayard aerodrome and damaged military barracks. HAND-TO-HAND STRUGGLE Recd. 6 p.m. Rugby, Nov. 23. A Chinese communique states: “Bitter hand-to-hand fighting is proceeding against the outer defences of Changteh. The Japanese are advancing from east, west and north under cover of aircraft and artillery fire. Repeated Japanese attacks have been repelled. “In western Hupeh the Chinese are attacking Ichang, Kingmen, and Tangyang.”—B.O.W.
