WELFARE OF WANGANUI
CITY COUNCIL ACTIVE Though the Tourist, Development and Publicity Committee set up by the Wanganui City Council had been in recess for some months, due to wartime conditions, the council had continued 4o raise questions concerning the welfare of the city, stated the chairman of the committe, Cr. T, S. Russell, at a recent meeting. These questions had been brought, to the notice of responsible authorities, Cr. Russell added, arid one result was the re-establishment in Wanganui of the Government Tourist Agency. This agency arranged travel facilities by road, rail, sea and air for Wanganui residents and was also of assistance to people visiting the city. Fllowing this meeting a report on the activities of the Tourist and Development Committee was submitted to the City Council and adopted. The question of a carnival week being held in either January or February of next year had been considered, the report stated, and a suggestion made that it should coincide with the exhibition of locally manufactured goods being arranged by the Chamber of Commerce. In the event of a carnival week being decided on various sports bodies and the bands would be approached for their assistance in promoting a demonstration toward the close of the carnival.
The committee also asked the City Council to do everything possible in urging the necessity of adequate shipping facilities being made available at Wanganui. It was also asked that handling charges of cargo be fixed at a strictly reasonable level, so that at all times they would react favourably on the cost of production and consequently the sale of locally-manufac-tured goods elsewhere on a competitive market.
