COAL FROM SURFACE

STRIP-MINING FOR BRITAIN Recd. 6 p.m. New York, Nov. 2\. The Washington correspondeth of the New York Herald-Tribune says that earth-moving machinery will be shipped to England for “strip-min-ing.” The earth is stripped off coal veins which are close to the surface, and the coal is dug out of open pits. This is common‘in American coalfields, but has never been used in England. A British estimate is that it will yield 45,000,000 tons of coal within nine years, as well as saving shipping space.
