THE TURF

AWAPUNI_GALLOPS CONSPICUOUS GOES SORE

(0.C.) Palmerston North, Nov. 17. Levin candidates were given their semi-final gallops at Awapuni yesterday morning under ideal conditions. Most ot the fast work took place on the course proper, the flags being about fifty feet out. Gladynev (A. S. Ewan) and Don Quex (S. Waddell) were sent over a mile and a-half. Given time to settle down, the first furlong taking 18sec., they went along easily for the first seven furlongs. Five furlongs from home the pace was cracked on, and they covered the last five in 1.6 3-5, which was really good. They finished brilliantly to complete in 2.52, the last three furlongs in 40sec. and the last seven in 1.37.

Another highlight was the gallop of the Stewards' Handicap horses Theolateral (W. J. Broughton), Sir Bradbury (M. 4 n( l re ws), and Park Light (R. Beale). It was over five furlongs, and they got away brilliantly, running the first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec. Park Light, who was giving away some weight, stayed with them to the home turn, but Sir Bradbury and Theolateral then drew ahead to be a couple of lengths clear at the post. Both were under a good hold and Sir Bradbury held a slight advantage at the post. They ran the full distance in 1.5 and could have done a lot better than 39 2-ssec. for the last three furlongs.

Happy Ending (H. Pearce) and Rink (S. Waddell) were companions over a mile. They were together and going smoothly after running the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec., and the full distance in 1.50. Classform (Andrews), Te Kawiti (S. Waddell), and Maestro (V. Sellars) were in that order at the end of nine furlongs run in 2.4 3-5. They travelled smoothly all through and there was plenty of pace on for the last five furlongs, which were covered in 1.7 3-5. They ran the last mile in 1.48 1-5, which was good. Intense (S. Waddell) and Phalaria (Ewan) sprinted half a mile, finishing together in 53 l-ssec. Subdued (S. Waddell) was to have gone with Broiefield, but the latter went away on his own. Subdued followed to run half a mile without apparent effort in 51 4-ssec., the last three furlongs in 37sec. Conspicuous was sore after a gallop on Saturday morning, and the trip south for the Derby is very much “in the air.” If the chestnut stays at home W. J. Broughton will be without a ride in the Derby, which he won last year on Rink. Beneve was well clear of Wildboy at the end of seven furlongs in 1.36 2- Alethea was going easily alongside Sea Quex at the end of five furlongs in 1.7, the last three in 38 3-5 sec. Other gallops noted were:—Over a mile: Colonel Rouge. 1.50 3-5: Tauuru and Aspen, 1.51-2-5. Over seven furlongs: Poutu (on the plough), 1.35 3- the last three in 42 3-ssec.; Lady Spiral (course proper), 1.41. Over five furlongs: Social Climber and Egyptian Lady, 1.7 2-5; Greek Effort, 1.8 3-5; Severity and Cracker jack, 1.7 2-5; Hippodrome, 1.7; and Tavern Light

Among the horses schooled were Vivid Night and Young Bill, Moderate, Taane Pango, and Anglo-Irish. All gave satisfactory displays. Riding Engagements. Riding engagements for Otaki are: W. J. Broughton, The Monarch, Hippodrome, Great Draw; W. J. Stevens, Alchemy, Te Kawiti, Vivid Night, Sea Quex; A. Midwood, Social Climber, Taane Pango; V. Sellars, Matawene, Sterling Lad, Kahuranaki; A.
