Religious Teaching. Two letters commending the Wanganui Education Board on its resolution urging the inclusion of the teaching of the principles ot Christianity in the school syllabus were received at the board's meeting yesterday. One was from the Church of Christ, Wanganui. and the other was from the recent Baptist Church Assembly held ih Wellington

Intermediate School. Yesterday afternoon demonstrations of life-saving and first aid were given by pupils of the Wanganui Intermediate Schoo), as part of a programme of school activities. Members of the Education Board, with their chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway, visited the school, and expressed appreciation of the standard of efficiency displayed. A short programme of items was given by the pupils. Filling in Trenches. The Wanganui Education Board has received advice from the Education Department that where emergency trenches could be filled in without cost the work might be carried out, but where cost was involved the Public Works Department should be notified. Stating that Wanganui was still a vulnerable area, the chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway, suggested that the matter be deferred for a month or two. This was agreed to. AH-day CrScket Match.

An all-day cricket match between a Wanganui team and the first eleven of the Wanganui Collegiate School will be played on the school ground to-day. The Wanganui team, selected by Mr. E. C. Gee, is: J k S. D. Tizard (captain), W. J. Stevenson, C. Gaylor, W. 13. McNaught, H. B. Cave, G. H. Newnan, I. Hamilton, L. B. Vasta, V. A. Stapleton, M. M. Marshall, D. A. Cameron, J. V. Hodson (twelfth man). Play will begin at 1Q.45 a.m. War Savings Drive. National Savings quotas were attained last week in 178 towns. Many of them hold a high record of regularity in week-by-week saving, while others depend for their successes on the carrying forward of surpluses recorded in earlier periods. Regular week-by-week savings are, of course, the more meritorious. District organisers are now visiting their sub-centres with the object of assisting local committees in their efforts to ward off inflation by encouraging increased regularity of saving. Coastal Shipping.

After a comparatively busy period which set in toward the end ot last week, the Wanganui waterfront is likely to be quiet for the next few days. Three coastal vessels were in port on Monday and one arrived yesterday,! but by last night they had all departed. Tne Foxton, which loaded at Castlecliff'for Wellington sailed in the early hours of yesterday morning, and the Hauturu lett on Monday night for Picton. The steamer Holm lea, which arrived on Saturday night with a full load of coal from West Coast mines, completed discharge early yesterday afternoon and returned to Greymouth. The only other vessel in port yesterday was tne small motorship Koau, which arrived in the morning with cement from Tarakohe and sailed again later in the day. The collier Titoki is due one day this week with a full load of Westport coal, but no definite date has been advised.
