OBITUARY

MR. JAMES WALKER

The death has occurred of Mr James Walker, of Devonport, at the age of 81. Born at Earlston, Berwickshire, Scotland, he joined the Royal Navy in 1885. He married and settled in ’New Zeal,nd in 1902. He was a prominent member of the Salvation Army. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. SISTER MARY ST. RAYMOND

The death occurred recently at the Lewisham Hospital, Wellington, of Sister Mary St. Raymond, a former member of the Lower Hutt community of the Sisters of Missions. For several years she had great success in teaching music, singing and the Gregorian chant at Lower Hutt and Christchurch, and was held in love and esteem by her many pupils, now scattred all over New Zealand. Sister Mary was the daughter of Mr. J. Murphy, Auckland. MRS. ELLEN GUNSON

An old Auckland resident, Mrs. Ellen Mildred Gunson, Panmure, has died in her 88th year. Mrs. Gunson was a daughter of two early Auckland settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bycroft, and was born not long after their arrival by the ship Josephine Willis in 1855. Mr. Bycroft and his brother, Mr. John Bycroft, established a flour mill in St. Andrew’s Road, Epsom, and the shell of its stone tower is still a landmark. From this beginning the present business of Bycroft, Limited, developed. Mrs. Gunson was the last surviving member of her father's family. She leaves one son and four daughters, and there are 18 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. MR. LAURENCE T. WILLIAMS

Mr. Laurence T. Williams, whose death is recorded, was a military medallist of the last war, the decoration being awarded for exceptional bravery shown in an attack and capture of a German machine-gun post. After his return to New Zealand he engaged in farming for some years in the Levin district, and later established a business in Newtown, Wellington. The deceased, who was a son of the late Mr. F. Williams, Hastings, is survived by his wife and three sons.
