RELIEF OF FAMINE
GRAIN REACHES CALCUTTA Recd. 6 p.m. Rugby, Nov. 12. Between July 16 and October 31 a total of 196,00 tons of food grains arrived in Calcutta for the relief of famine. These figures exclude either arrivals at the other ports of Bengal or arrivals during the free trade period. Such arrivals alone are reported to be 100,000 tons, according Io information reaching the India Office. The Government of Bengal has I been tackling the problem of reliefi and is taking responsibility for the maintenance of medical treatment and repatriation of destitute persons.
In the Calcutta hospitals there are now over 2000 available beds for destitutes. It is also reported that 3300 tons of food grains are now reaching Calcutta daily, and 20,000 tons are being sent daily from Calcutta Io districts stricken by famine.—B.O.W.
