STRENUOUS AIR DUTY

South Pacific Base, Oct. 17. A reminder of the dangerous work of the aerial photographer over enemy territory in the South Pacific is an award of the Oak-Leaf Cluster (Air Medal) made to a 13th Army Air Corps pilot, since reported missing in action. Second Lieut. Roy L. Peterson. during the period June 28 to Julv 26, participated in ten such flights, the ■lazardous nature of which, due at times to extremely adverse weather conditions, is stressed in the citation. These missions were performed alone in an unarmed aircraft with attack by enemy planer at any time during flight probable and expected. These missions were performed at times from such low altitudes that heavy anti-aircraft fire concentrations could also be expected. Altitudes went up to over 37.000 feet, with temperatures down to 50 degrees below zero. Despite these obstacles, Peterson, showing extraordinary determination, successfully accomplished the tasks allotted him. The award is in lieu of an additional Air Medal.
