NEW ZEALAND CADETS
TEN TO BE SELECTED FOR DUNTROON COURSE (P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 15. Ten cadets from New Zealand will be sent to the Royal Military College at Duntroon, Australia, early next year to be trained for commissions in the New Zealand regular forces, the Minister of Defence, the, Hon. F. Jones, announced. Mr. Jones said the co-operation of headmasters of secondary schools and colleges wquld be sought in the selection of youths who wished to make the Army their career, and provision would be also be made for consideration of applications from youths in the services. Twenty to 25 candidates would be selected and given a testing course at Trentham towards the end of January, and at the end of the course the final ten would be selected. Candidates must be British subjects and of pure European or Maori descent. A strict medical examination would have to be passed, and before proceeding to Duntroon each candidate would have to undertake to remain in the forces for twelve years.
The Minister added that a high standard of education was required, especially in mathematics and physics or chemistry. A pass in the University entrance examination, including pass marks 55 per cent, in mathematics, was the minimum standard accentable. Candidates must be over 17 but under 20 at March 1 next.
