FAILED TO REPORT
FARMER FINED £5O (P.A.) New Plymouth, Oct. 1. Michael Kowalewski, farmer, of Waipuku, was fined £5O at Stratford yesterday on a charge of failing to report to the military authorities. It the fine was not paid it would be levied by distraint on his herd, the magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, warned Kowalewski. “It is quite clear that some compulsion must be put on him. and without, if possible, interfering with production from his farm,” said the magistrate. “I cannot believe that he has made every effort *o dispose of his farm. He has esc’JA-’d military obligations long enough, I cannot send him straight to gaol, as that would ruin hig herd.” Tile police stated s’iat Kowalewski, a single man, aged 30, was one of six brothers, all farming, and it was considered that the other fi\J could look after the farm and relea e him. They refused to do so because they said they had enough to do. '
