400LB. OF WHITEBAIT DUMPED
LACK OF TRANSPORT ON COAST. Christchurch, Sept. 29. Whitebait caught at Jackson's Bay, in South Westland, has had to be dumped for the last few days because there has been no means of transporting the fish to the market. Unfortunately for the fishemen the service aeroplane on arrival on one occasion found a full load of passengers for the return trip and the fish could not be taken. One consignment of 4001 b. had to be dumped. Several boxes were placed aboard the Gael, but they failed to survive the sea journey and became a loss.
An endeavour is now being made to arrange special trips for consignments of fish, such as operate from Paringa. Only small supplies have so far arrived from South West land for the Christchurch market. Since the recent floods no catches of whitebait have been recorded at Greymouth, while at Hokitika, where conditions are ideal now, only small catches have been made.
