PORTUGAL AND JAPS

DECLARATION OF WAR EXPECTED

Reed. 7 p.m. London, Oct. 2. It is reported in diplomatic circles that Portugal has decided to declare war on Japan, says the Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent. The immediate cause would be the Japanese seizure of Timor, half of which is Portuguese-owned.

By declaring war on Japan, Dr. Salazar may seek at the same time to reaffirm Portugal’s loyalty to Britain and may hope to secure the benefit of Lend-Lease arrangements with the United States, of which Portugal is at present badly in need. The food shortage has recently become acute in Madeira and the Capo Verde Islands, where deaths from starvation have occurred.
