NEW JAP PLANE
MORE FORMIDABLE THAN ZEROJFIGHTER ENCOUNTERED OVER CANTON (By Telegraph—Pre** Association—Copyright' Recd. 10 p.m. Washington. Sept. 30. The Japanese have a fighter more -formidable than the Zero, said Senator Brewster. The new super-Zero is apparently just getting into production, because only a few had yet been sighted, but these few proved tough and the ratio of American victories over losses, which had been as high as four to one, had begun to drop.
The new plane was first encountered over Canton when five of seven American bombers were shot down. The latest model resembles the old Zora, but it is faster and better protected and has more firepower. Senator Brewster added that the Japanese also have a new twin-engine bomber.
The War Department said that detailed information of new planes was still officially classified as secret. Daily communiques showed no appreciable change of the ratio in American and Japanese losses.
