DENIAL OF RUMOURS Recd. 7 p.m. London, Sept. 2. The Portuguese Prime .Minister has issued a comunique denying rumours which are being spread suggesting that Portugal will soon change her policy regarding the war. Prior to Dr. Salazar’s announcement th? diplomatic correspondent of the Evening Standard stated that Portugal had ordered a complete mobilisation of the naval personnel and was serving call-up papers for the army, and that this might oe followed by the declaration of a state of war between Portugal and Japan as a protest against the Japanese atrocities in Macao and Timor. The correspondent says that 200 Portuguese soldiers have been killed in Macao and that Portugal has received reports giving details of atrocities against civilians. At least three divisions of the army, he declares, are now available for d.spatch to the Far East, and the Portuguese fishing fleet is being converted into armed trawlers ana mine-sweepers.
