HIGHWAY NEAR WAIOURU

CRITICISED AT COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

A portion of the Main State Highway between Taihape and Waiouru was described as disgraceful by Cr. L. E. Deacon at the monthly meeting yesterday of the Rangitikei County Council. This section, about a mile in length, said Cr. Deacon, had not been metalled for the past three months, and in that period had received no attention from a grader. He suggested that the council write to the Public Works Department, which maintained the road, and enter a protest.

A motorist who had driven from Whakatane, through Rotorua and Hamilton, had declared that this was the worst section of road he had encountered in the entire journey, said Cr. Deacon. It was impossible to drive along the road at a speed of more than 10 miles an hour without meeting trouble. In places the potholes were a foot deep. The complaint was referred to the county engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair.
