WANGANUI PATRIOTIC CONTEST MISS UNITED NATIONS WINS

Faced with a deficit of £6OOO in its yearly quota of £18,500 for the National Patriotic Fund, the Wanganui Patriotic Committee five weeks ago launched a Popular Girl contest. Last night th? contest was successfully concluded with the announcement that the objective had been exceeded by more than 50 per cent., the gross receipts of the campaign being £9521 8s 9d. Four girls, sponsored by various organisations, took part in the contest, and well-organised and enthusiastic committees were busily engaged for five weeks in raising funds which would not only enable the Patriotic committee to reach its quota, but would place their resoective nominees at the head of the list. Young, honorary secretary of the Wanganui Patriotic Committee, from the Opera House stage last, night at the conclusion of the patriotic display staged by the various committees. Bouquets were presented to each of the contestants.

The chairman of the Wanganui Patriotic Committee. Mr. N. R. Bain, thanked the general public for their generous support, and the committees for the work they had put into making the campaign such a marked success.

On behalf of the National Patriotic Fund Board, the Hon. Vincent Ward, national secretary, expressed appreciation of the sustained efforts for which Wanganui has been responsible in raising money for patriotic purposes.

At the conclusion the candidates and their committees were entertained at supper, when several congratulatory speeches were made.
