RAILCAR BREAKS DOWN

STEAM TRAIN- SUBSTITUTED After experiencing engine trouble practically all the way from Wellington to Aramoho, the railcar Aotea broke down on the Westmere "bank" late on Monday night and was unable to proceed further. A steam train was substituted for the rest, of the journey to New Plymouth. The railcar left Wellington at 5.13 p.m. with a full load of passengers and was 45 minutes late reaching Palmerston North. Further time was lost between there and Aramoho, where the car was 50 minutes behind schedule. Following a stop for re freshments the journey was resumed but while climbing the steep gradient north of Aramoho further trouble was experienced and the railcar returned to Aramoho at midnight. The steam train left Aramoho at 12.50 a.m. and reached New Plymouth at five o'clock, more than four hours behind the railcar's schedule. Temporary repairs were carried out to the railcar Aotea at Aramoho yesterday, alter which the car ran empty to Wellington, following the New Plymouth express. So that a railcar would be available at New Plymouth yesterday for the scheduled trip to Wellington, an extra car ran empty from south yesterday. This railcar passed through Aramoho shortly before noon.
