PERISHABLE PRODUCTS
PROTEST AT FIXED PRICE A. protest against the Government's actions in imposing a ceiling price on perishable and other farm products. particularly vegetables, without also setting a minimum price, was made by the Farmers' Federation in a recent remit which was placed before the Minister of Marketing, Hon. J. G. Barclay. A copy of the correspondence was before the Wanganui Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at its monthly meeting yesterday. It was stated that the course adopted was manifestly unfair to producers and was a completely onesided arrangement. “I note that your federation considers that if a ceiling price is fixed for vegetables there should also be a minimum price.” the Minister stated in reply. “I should like to say that I sympathise fully with your viewpoint. “It. was largely because of this consideration that the Government has offered contracts to growers to produce vegetables at a fixed price. The contract system offers a guarantee that prices will not fall below the contract figure, and as such it is a valuable safeguard to growers.”
