MARTON NOTES
MARTON BOWLING CLUB A SUCCESSFUL SEASON. A record attendance of members were present at the annual meeting of the Marton Bowling Club on Monday evening, Mr. A. Way presiding. The report and balance-sheet showed a satisfactory stat-e of affairs and were unanimously adopted. Congratulations were to the official's committees and custodian (Mr. Rubery) on the efficient manner in which the affairs of the club had been managed. A vote of thanks by acclamation was accorded Mr. Rubery on the perfect manner in which the greens had been kept during the past season and to the wonderful improvement in the grounds and flower beds, which had now become one of the best beauty spots in Marton. Alterations to the rules were made as follows: That two vice-presidents be elected annually, also that a match committee of three be elected at the annual meeting. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr. T. Barton; vicepresidents, Messrs. W. Hamer and F. Hempieman; secretary, Mr. Smith; treasurer, Mr. W. G. Winchcombe; auditor. Mr. A. B. Caverhill; green supervisor, Mr. J. A. Hawkins; committee, Messrs. A. Mclndoe. O. Brabyn, A. Tilley; reclassification and match committee, Messrs. W. Hamer, A. Tilley, O. Brabyn; delegates to Wanganui Centre, Messrs. T. Barton and A. Way; inter-club selector, Mr. W. Hamer. There were three ballots during the election of officers. The following new members were elected: Messrs. W. Newman. A. Grade, G. Griffin and Reg. Winchcombe. Messrs V. Hawkins, T. Barbarich, R. T. Kelsey, L. Smith and Frank Green tendered their resignations, which were accepted with regret. It was decided that Ihe members’ subscriptions be £3, which will also ever the cost of afternoon teas during the coming season. The president (Mr. T. Barton), extended a hearty welcome Io their overseas members who had returned to New Zealand—H. J. Dashwood, C. Baines and R. J. Callan. Appreciation of the services rendered by Mrs. R. Bland and Mrs. J. F. Morris in. attending to the afternoon tea service was recorded, also to Mr. S. G. Goebel for his valuable services as secretary during he past nine years. Recommendations Carried. The following recommendations from a special general meeting were agreed to: That the competitions be curtailed and consist of senior and B championships, champion pairs and full-rink championships; that eight qualifying games be played for the full-rink competition; that the present system of selection of rinks be maintained; that all players be re-classified before the opening of the next season and that re-classification and match committees be appointed at the annual meeting; that a competition for the top four rinks and also for the intermediate four top rinks for all clubs in the Wanganui Centre be inaugurated, and that the centre be asked to arrange competitions on these lines.—Deterred till after the war. The appointment of mid-week selectors was referred to mid-week players to select their own committee. The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to all the officials and committees for the successful manner in which they had conducted the affairs of the club, special reference was made to the work of Mr. Rubery in keeping the greens and grounds in such a perfect condition. NAVY AND AIR FORCE MEN ON SPECIAL LEAVE Two servicemen on special leave— L.A.C. Fred Sanders and O.S. Basil Harper—were entertained at afternoon tea by the Marton Patriotic Society on Tuesdav afternoon. Mr. T. C. Ward presided ano referred to the splendid progress that was being made on all fronts by the Allies. He congratulated the boys on the step that they nad taken to uphold the prestige of the British nation. On behalf of the society and St. John Ambulance Nursing Division he presented L.A.C. Sanders with a pocket wallet, money belt, and cigarettes and a parcel of wooilen garments. Mrs. H. T. Arkwright, secretary of Rangitikei Navy League, stated that, they were proud of the boys that were going into the navy. The Rangitikei branch was a good friend to the boys joining the navy, and they were pleased to help them in their difficulties. On behalf of the Rangitikei branch Mrs. Arkwright presented Basil Harper with a woollen seaman's jersey, pair of sea boot stockings, gloves and scarf, which had been made from wool off the sheep's back in Rangitikei, and spun and knitted by members of the Rangitikei brancn.
L.A.C. Fred Sanders thanked the society for their kind remarks and gifts which would be very useful and he hoped that they would he in time overseas to be on the winning side. O.S. Basil Harper stated the Rangitikei branch had a wonderful name in the N.Z.R.N. for their assistance in providing woollen garments for the New Zealand Navy and thanked the branch for their very 'useful gifts. MARTON REHABILITATION COMMITTEE The Rehabilitation Board has estab lished a Marton Rehabilitation Committee as follows:—Mr. E. B. Gordon, M.P.; Mr. K. W. Dalrymple (Rang.tikei County Council) local authorities’ representative; Mr. G. Gregory, R.S.A.; Mr. C. Dunn, organised labour; Mrs. J. Fisher, W.W.S.A.; Mr. C. S. Beechey, business or farming; 2 'r. F. Mairs, Rehabilitation Board (secretary). The initial meeting of the committee will be held at the Rangitikei County Council Chambers on Saturday, August 28, at 7.30 p.m., when a representative of the National Service Department will be in attendance to explain the functions of the committee. LABOUR PARTY SOCIAL AND DANCE The Labour Party social and dance (organised by the railwaymen) will be held in the Rifle Club Hall, Marton Junction, on Saturday, August 28, Vo welcome Corporal R. Freeman, candidate for Ranritikei. Exhibition dancing by Peggy Freeman, also local talent, novelty dances and good supper will be featured. RANGITIKEI ELECTORATE Corporal R. Freeman, N.Z.R.A.F., official Labour candidate, assisted by Corporal W. Oliver, N.Z.R.A.F., and Mr. A. H. Langslow will address the electors in the Marton Tovv.i Hall al 8 o'clock this (Wednesday) evening.
