Mr. V. W. Simms, has been reelected chairman of the Otorohanga County Council. Mr. S. J. Harbutt has been re-elect-ed chairman of the Auckland Electric Power Board. He has been chairman since 1937. The Hon. A. Burns. M.L.C.. has been re-appointed to represent the Education Board on the Auckland University College Council.

Mr. I. J. Wilson has been elected secretary of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, succeeding Mr. H. W. Armitage, who has resigned owing to ill health.

Mr. J. Bowman, who resigned from the Police Force recently and is leavMarton to enter business in Hunterville, was farewelled at a recent gathering, Mr. A. Gracie making a presentation. Professor A. H. Tocker has been elected rector of Canterbury University College for three years from March 1, 1943. or till such earlier time as a permanent academic head is appointed. An old identity of the Puketapu district, Mr. William Stanley Jones, J.P., died recently at his residence, Kennedy Road, Napier. He was born in Puketapu in 1875. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. William James Jones, a well-known contractor in the Puketapu district in the early days. Mr. Jones assisted his father in the contracting business, and he held the record for cartage of wool, with a sixhorse team. Later he went to the Dunedin, district working on gold dredges. He married Miss Jessie Burns, ox Dunedin, in 1903, and alter his marriage settled in Puketapu, where he took over his father s business with his brothers, as Jones Bros. After the earthquake he sold his property at. Puketapu, and resided in retirement at Napier till his death. He is survived by his wife and a family of four, Messrs. Keith and William Jones and Mesdames Miller and Hogan.
