DAIRY SHIPMENTS

ESTIMATED TONN'GE FROM NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) Wellington, May 20 | It was estimated that during thu year a possible 105,000 tons of butter 92,000 tons of cheese and from 300 C to 3500 tons of pure butterfat woulc be shipped to Great Britain, said the Minister ol Agriculture and Marketing, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, to the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Dairy Board yesterday. It was unfortunate, on these figures, he added. that there would be a decrease oi from 9 to 10 per cent, in the In:a] production of butter ana cheese graded for export. The actual decrease in total butlerfat production, however, was not as great as these figures would indicate, because there had been a substan.ially increased local demand for butter and cheese, together with increased milk and cream supply, due mainly Io armed forces requirements. The decrease followed on two exceptionally heavy producing seasons and brought lhe industry back to the approximate production level it was sustaining at the outbreak of the war. Adverse climatic conditions, particularly in the Auckland district, appeared *to have been the most directly influencing factor, though labour difficulties and the lack of adequate fertilisers had been contributing factors. The production decreases in the Taranaki and Manawatu districts, which had hac good seasons, were very little. As w-ey the case list year, there had been good shipping clearances of dairy produce and stocks at present h id were below of previous years.
