SUGAR CONTENT IN BEER

(P.A.) Wellington. May 20. An amendment to the Manufacture of Liquor Emergency Regulations, limiting the amount of sugar that, may he used in the manufacture of beer to 31b. for every 401 b. of malt, and forbidding the adding of sugar to any brew after particulars have b'*en taken for duty purposes, whether before of after the beer has left the brewery, was gazetted to-night. Commentinc: on the amendment, the acting Minister for Customs, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, said that in general principle the regulations, which had now been in force for almost a year, had achieved their objective in bringing about a reduction in the proof spirit content of beer. One or two loopholes had, however, been discovered whereby the object of the regulations could be departed from, and the present amendment was designed to cover these.
