WATERSIDE WORKERS’ EXEMPTIONS Recd 6.30 p.m. Sydney. April .10. The Prime Minister. Mr. J. Curtin, has ordered, the cancellation of Sydney whar labourers’ manpower exemptions if 4000 strikers did not return to work by noon on Monday. It is understood, however, that. Mr. Curtin has agreed to defer action until Tuesday when the result, of the secret ballot of strikers will be known. Cancellation of the strikers’ manpower exemptions would mean that they could be called up for army or civilian construction corps or for any other work the manpower authorities might direct. Australia is at present making an intensive drive for manpower. Combouts have recently been made of fashionable suburbs in the metropolitan areas and women not gainfully emploved as well as men have been ordered to report to the authorities. On Friday officials “raided" luxurv restaurants in Sydney. About 300 people, mostly women, were asked for their identity cards. At least 60 per cent, of these people were ordered to attend the manpower officer for interviews. The squads made it clear they were searching for women idlers as well as for men.
